MONROVIA, Liberia — Liberian authorities have announced what they describe as the largest drug seizure in the country’s history after security forces uncovered a massive quantity of cocaine during a raid on a suspected illegal storage facility near the capital, Monrovia.
The operation was carried out in Duazon, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Monrovia, where police officers raided a warehouse believed to have been used to store large quantities of narcotics. Videos and photographs released by authorities showed dozens of sealed suitcases and boxes loaded inside a truck, with investigators later confirming they contained high-grade cocaine.
According to Liberia National Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman, forensic analysis confirmed the substance was cocaine with an estimated street value exceeding US$370 million, making it the biggest narcotics seizure ever recorded in Liberia. Authorities said several suspects, including two foreign nationals and multiple Liberians, were arrested during the operation as investigations continue into what officials believe is part of a major international drug trafficking network.
The discovery comes just weeks after Liberian security agencies intercepted more than 237 kilograms of cocaine valued at over US$19 million at Roberts International Airport, underscoring growing concerns that the country is increasingly being targeted as a transit point for international drug traffickers.
Officials React
Following the raid, Inspector General Gregory Coleman described the seizure as a major victory for Liberia’s security services and pledged to continue dismantling transnational criminal networks operating in the country. Authorities said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible.
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has repeatedly stressed its commitment to combating organized drug trafficking.
In an earlier statement shared on its official channels, the agency declared:
“This successful interdiction is a testament to the renewed vigilance of our officers. We are sending a clear message to international cartels: Liberia will not be a playground for your illicit trade.”
