EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Argentina produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat England 2–0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal, securing their place in Sunday’s World Cup Final against Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The reigning world champions controlled the match from start to finish, dominating possession and creating far more attacking opportunities than England. Argentina finished with 53% possession, completed 541 of 607 passes, and outshot England 15–5, underlining their superiority throughout the contest.

England struggled to establish any rhythm in midfield as Argentina’s relentless pressing and crisp passing dictated the pace. Despite England forcing 24 turnovers, they were unable to convert those moments into meaningful scoring opportunities.

Argentina’s attack proved far more efficient. They registered five shots on target compared to England’s two and scored twice from their sustained pressure. One goal came from inside the penalty area while another was struck from outside the box, with both goals showcasing Argentina’s attacking quality. The South Americans also recorded two assists, highlighting the fluid movement that repeatedly opened England’s defense.

England managed only five total attempts, with just two testing the Argentine goalkeeper. Their lone corner kick and limited attacking presence reflected a frustrating evening against one of the tournament’s most disciplined defenses.

Argentina also controlled the flow of the game through their passing. They completed nearly 90% of their passes, consistently building attacks while denying England extended periods of possession. Their dominance extended to set pieces as well, earning six corner kicks compared to England’s one.

The match was competitive physically, with England committing 11 fouls and Argentina 15. Three Argentine players received yellow cards while England picked up one booking, but neither side was reduced to ten men.

For England, the defeat marks another painful semifinal exit despite an impressive tournament run. Their defense battled throughout the match, but Argentina’s quality in possession and efficiency in front of goal ultimately proved decisive.

Argentina now advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final, where they will face Spain on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The showdown promises to feature two of the tournament’s most technically gifted teams, with football’s biggest prize on the line.

England, meanwhile, will turn their attention to the third-place playoff, hoping to end their World Cup campaign on a positive note after falling just one match short of the final.
