MANCHESTER, England — Bruno Fernandes delivered a captain’s performance at Old Trafford on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick as Manchester United came from behind to defeat Ipswich Town 5–2 and secure their first Premier League victory of the 2026–27 season.
Ipswich stunned the home crowd in the 29th minute when Leif Davis finished an attack created by Abdul Fatawu to put the visitors 1–0 ahead. United, coming off an opening-weekend defeat to Hull City, suddenly found themselves under pressure against another newly promoted side.
But Fernandes changed the direction of the match.
The Manchester United captain equalized in the 40th minute, capitalizing after Marcelino Núñez lost his footing and Matheus Cunha quickly moved the ball forward. Fernandes finished the opportunity to send United into halftime level at 1–1.

Fernandes then turned from goalscorer to creator. In the 82nd minute, he produced the pass that released Bryan Mbeumo, who finished to make it 5–1 and effectively put the match beyond Ipswich. Fernandes ended the afternoon with three goals and an assist.
Ipswich continued fighting and grabbed a consolation goal through substitute Chuba Akpom in the 90th minute plus stoppage time, but the damage had already been done.
The final whistle confirmed an emphatic 5–2 Manchester United victory.
For manager Michael Carrick, the result was an important response following United’s disappointing 2–0 opening-day defeat to Hull City. The victory gives Manchester United their first three points of the new Premier League campaign.
The biggest story, however, was Fernandes. His hat-trick and assist demonstrated once again how influential the United captain remains, particularly when his team needs someone to take control of a match.
