MONROVIA, Liberia — The Government of Liberia has announced the arrival of 200 Muturu cattle imported from Guinea and Mali as part of a new initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s livestock sector and increasing domestic beef production.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of Agriculture, published on July 29 following a July 27 announcement, the cattle will be distributed to farmers in Grand Kru County, while the government also plans to rehabilitate the county’s ranch to support long-term livestock development.
The Ministry said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand Liberia’s national cattle herd, improve food security, create economic opportunities for rural farmers, and reduce the country’s dependence on imported food products.
Officials believe that increasing local livestock production could help strengthen agricultural productivity, support rural livelihoods, and contribute to greater self-sufficiency in beef production over time.
However, the government has not yet released detailed information regarding the project’s overall cost, the timeline for distributing the cattle to farmers, or the veterinary and animal health measures that will accompany the program.
