ABUJA, Nigeria — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission convened a policy seminar on August 3 to examine the growing relationship between geopolitics and the blue economy in West Africa, highlighting the strategic importance of the region’s maritime resources and coastal industries.
The seminar brought together policymakers, experts, and regional stakeholders to discuss how geopolitical developments are shaping the management and development of West Africa’s oceans, coastlines, and maritime economy. Participants explored the economic and strategic value of coastal resources, major shipping routes, and ocean-based industries that play a vital role in the region’s growth.
Discussions focused on the opportunities presented by the blue economy, including sustainable fisheries, maritime transport, offshore energy, tourism, and marine resource development. Speakers also examined the importance of protecting these sectors to ensure long-term economic prosperity and regional integration.
The meeting also addressed several challenges facing the region’s maritime domain, including maritime insecurity, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, environmental pressures, and increasing geopolitical competition in the Atlantic Ocean. Participants noted that these issues have significant implications for economic development, food security, international trade, and the livelihoods of millions of people living in coastal communities.
ECOWAS emphasized the need for stronger regional cooperation to improve maritime governance, enhance security at sea, and promote the sustainable use of marine resources. The Commission underscored that effective management of the blue economy will require collaboration among member states, international partners, the private sector, and research institutions.
The policy seminar forms part of ECOWAS’ broader efforts to strengthen regional economic integration and sustainable development by promoting policies that safeguard West Africa’s maritime assets while unlocking new opportunities for investment, employment, and economic growth across the region.
