KHARTOUM, Sudan — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and recovery efforts in Sudan following a high-level visit by Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, which culminated in the reopening of the regional organization’s mission in Khartoum.
According to an official statement from IGAD, Dr. Gebeyehu’s mission focused on strengthening the organization’s engagement with Sudanese authorities and key stakeholders while reaffirming IGAD’s support for a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned process to restore peace, stability and national recovery.
A key outcome of the visit was the formal reopening of IGAD’s mission in Khartoum, restoring the organization’s permanent diplomatic presence in the Sudanese capital. Officials said the office will serve as a platform for enhanced dialogue, coordination and cooperation as Sudan continues efforts to address the political, humanitarian and security challenges facing the country.
During the visit, the Executive Secretary emphasized that lasting peace can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue led by the Sudanese people, with regional organizations and international partners providing support where appropriate. He reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to working alongside Sudan’s institutions and regional partners to promote peace, reconciliation and long-term stability.
The reopening of the Khartoum mission is expected to strengthen IGAD’s capacity to engage directly with government officials, humanitarian organizations, civil society groups and other stakeholders involved in Sudan’s recovery process. Maintaining a permanent presence on the ground will also enable the organization to monitor developments more closely and respond more effectively to emerging needs.
