
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The President of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting Madagascar’s political transition following a meeting with the country’s newly accredited ambassador to the continental body.
According to a post published by the African Union on X (formerly Twitter), President Youssouf received Auguste Richard Paraina, the Permanent Representative of Madagascar to the African Union, who formally presented his letters of credence.
During the meeting, Ambassador Paraina thanked the President of the Commission for the warm reception and expressed Madagascar’s appreciation for the African Union’s continued support for the country.
The African Union said President Youssouf reaffirmed the Commission’s “full support for the transition led by the Malagasy authorities” and praised the new roadmap designed to guide the country back to constitutional governance.
According to the AU’s post on X, the Commission President also recalled his earlier meeting with the President of Madagascar’s Refoundation on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi, where discussions focused on the country’s political transition.
The Commission President further welcomed the ongoing inclusive political dialogue in Madagascar, describing it as an important step toward restoring constitutional order.
According to the African Union’s post, Youssouf reiterated that the Commission “stands ready to accompany the country in its return to constitutional order,” underscoring the AU’s continued commitment to supporting peace, political stability, and democratic governance across the continent.
The meeting reflects the African Union’s ongoing engagement with member states undergoing political transitions and its broader efforts to encourage inclusive dialogue and constitutional governance as key pillars of lasting stability in Africa.
