The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) has declared its general election year during its 49th General Assembly. The elections will take place in the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the weekend of September 15th thru 17th, 2023. The ULAA’s General Assembly is the largest gathering of Liberians in the Americas, and an estimated 2000 registered chapter members are expected to attend this year’s Assembly.
ULAA is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting and advancing the interests of Liberians in the Americas. The organization also seeks to promote peace and democracy in Liberia, as well as foster unity and friendship among Liberians and friends of Liberia.
In keeping with the ULAA Constitution’s provisions, the National President, Hon. J. Shiwoh Kamara, has nominated several esteemed community members to serve on the Elections Commission. Chapter XI Article 2(b) of the Constitution states that “the President shall nominate members of Semi–Autonomous Commissions and National Standing Committees with the advice and consent of the Board.” The nominees are to be confirmed by the National Board of Directors, following a thorough vetting process involving outstanding Liberians with experience and integrity.
The nominees for the Elections Commission include Hon. Bartee Togba, Chairman designate, Liberian Association of Pennsylvania; Hon. Aflowa Zaza, Co-Chairperson designate, Liberian Association of North Jersey; Hon. James McCabe, Secretary-designate, Federation of Liberian Associations in Ohio (FOLAO); Hon. Cora Wallace Sneh, Member designate, Organization of Liberians in Minnesota; Hon. Telee Brown, Member designate, Staten Island Liberian Community Association; Hon. George Blay, member designate, Liberian Community Association of Washington DC/Metro Areas; and Hon. Columbus Zinnah, Member designate, Liberian Association of Indiana.
The ULAA encourages individuals and Liberian-owned businesses wanting to advertise or attend this year’s event to contact its National Secretariat. The organization will also announce the calendar of events leading to this year’s convention shortly.
The ULAA’s General Assembly is an opportunity for Liberians in the Americas to come together, share ideas, and contribute to the development of Liberia. It provides a platform for Liberians to ULdialogue, addresses issues affecting their community, and fosters unity and cooperation.
The upcoming elections are significant as they provide an opportunity for ULAA members to choose their leaders democratically. The Elections Commission, comprising distinguished members of the community, will oversee the election process to ensure transparency, fairness, and accuracy.
ULAA has played a critical role in advocating for Liberians’ rights and interests in the Americas.
