On Tuesday, the European Command of the U.S. military reported that an American MQ-9 Reaper drone was brought down by U.S. forces after colliding with a Russian Su-27 fighter jet above the Black Sea.
According to U.S. Air Force General James Hecker, commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa, the MQ-9 was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was hit by the Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and the complete loss of the MQ-9. General Hecker also noted that the Russian intercept was not only unsafe and unprofessional but also nearly caused both aircraft to crash.
Although Russian intercepts in the region are common, this particular incident is significant due to its reckless and unsafe nature, as emphasized by National Security Council spokesman John Kirby in his remarks to the press.
