According to The Guardian, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg, has promised that his staff will not be intimidated after former US President Donald Trump called for his supporters to protest any action taken against him.
Bragg’s office is expected to bring an indictment against Trump this week regarding hush payments to adult actor Stormy Daniels, but officials and Trump’s lawyers have said they are uncertain about the timing and specifics of any court proceedings.
In an email obtained by Politico, Bragg addressed the case without mentioning Trump by name, stating that his office will continue to apply the law evenly and fairly, and will speak publicly only when appropriate. Bragg also stated that attempts to intimidate his office or threaten the rule of law in New York will not be tolerated, and any specific or credible threats will be fully investigated.
On Saturday, Trump supporters gathered at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, while Trump himself traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to attend a college wrestling tournament. He made no mention of a criminal indictment or arrest at the event and appeared to enjoy the matches with Senator Markwayne Mullin.
Speaking before Trump’s arrival, Mullin compared the likely charges against Trump with unproven claims against his 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton, and stated that the district attorney needs to focus on putting “bad guys” in jail instead of targeting Trump.
If any indictment is handed down, it is likely to claim that the payments made to Daniels were an illegal use of campaign finances. The grand jury looking at the case may listen to one further witness on Monday, raising the possibility of an indictment coming later in the week.
