MONROVIA, Liberia — August 10, 2026 — The government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has announced an expansion of Liberia’s Presidential Scholarship Program, extending the initiative to public high schools and technical and vocational education and training institutions across the country.
The expansion was announced on August 9 following details provided by Deputy Minister Bill McGill Jones during the Executive Mansion’s August 7 press briefing.
Under the expanded program, scholarship opportunities will reach students beyond the traditional university system, including those attending public high schools and pursuing technical and vocational education and training, commonly known as TVET.
Expanding Access Across Liberia
The decision broadens the scope of the Presidential Scholarship Program and is intended to increase access to government-supported educational opportunities in different parts of Liberia.
Including public high schools could provide additional educational assistance to students before they enter universities, colleges or vocational institutions.
The inclusion of TVET institutions also extends scholarship opportunities to Liberians pursuing technical and occupational training.
TVET programs typically prepare students for employment in skilled professions and trades through practical and career-focused education.
Greater Focus on Technical and Vocational Training
The expansion comes as Liberia continues efforts to develop its workforce and increase opportunities for young people to acquire practical skills.
Technical and vocational institutions provide training in areas that can include construction, electrical work, plumbing, mechanics, agriculture, information technology, hospitality and other skilled occupations.
By incorporating TVET institutions into the Presidential Scholarship Program, the government is expanding the categories of education eligible for scholarship assistance.
The initiative also widens access beyond students following conventional university education pathways.
Nationwide Reach
The government said the expanded scholarship initiative will reach institutions across Liberia, potentially providing greater access to students outside Monrovia and Montserrado County.
Further information is expected regarding eligibility requirements, participating institutions, application procedures, the number of scholarships available and how funding will be distributed among public high schools and TVET institutions.
The expansion represents the latest development in the Boakai administration’s education initiatives as the government moves to extend the Presidential Scholarship Program to a broader range of Liberian students and educational institutions.
