LUSAKA, Zambia — The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is continuing efforts to strengthen digital connectivity and regional integration through its Inclusive Digitalization for East and Southern Africa (IDEA) initiative, according to the organization’s latest official updates.

The initiative recently convened its third Steering Committee meeting, building on the momentum generated during the inaugural IDEA Annual Digital Forum held in Lusaka. The meeting brought together government officials, communications regulators, development partners, private-sector representatives and other stakeholders to review progress and coordinate the next phase of the program.

The IDEA initiative is designed to accelerate digital transformation across the COMESA region by improving cooperation among member states and promoting policies that support secure, efficient and interoperable digital services. Participants discussed ways to strengthen cross-border collaboration, align regulatory frameworks and expand access to digital technologies that support economic growth and regional integration.

According to COMESA, the initiative focuses on creating an environment where governments, businesses and citizens can benefit from seamless digital services across national borders. Areas of cooperation include digital governance, regulatory harmonization, digital infrastructure, electronic commerce, cybersecurity and the development of policies that encourage innovation while protecting consumers.

A key objective of the program is to improve coordination between national regulators and policymakers, making it easier for businesses and individuals to conduct digital transactions throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. By working toward common standards and interoperable systems, COMESA aims to reduce barriers that often limit cross-border digital trade and investment.

Officials also emphasized the importance of partnerships among governments, regional institutions, development organizations and the private sector in achieving a more connected digital economy. The collaborative approach is intended to ensure that digital transformation benefits businesses of all sizes while expanding access to online public services and financial technologies for citizens across the region.

The Inclusive Digitalization for East and Southern Africa initiative forms part of COMESA’s broader strategy to leverage technology as a driver of regional integration, economic competitiveness and sustainable development.

Why it matters: Harmonizing digital systems and regulatory frameworks across COMESA member states could simplify cross-border payments, facilitate electronic commerce, improve access to online government services and reduce the cost of doing business throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. As digital technologies become increasingly central to economic development, stronger regional cooperation has the potential to enhance trade, attract investment and create new opportunities for businesses and citizens alike.
