Former U.S. President Donald Trump made a surprise visit to the site of a train derailment in Palestine, Ohio on Tuesday, expressing his condolences to the victims and their families.
The derailment occurred on Monday when a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed and caught fire, causing a massive explosion and sending toxic smoke billowing into the air. At least 10 people were killed and dozens were injured in the accident.
Trump arrived at the site early Tuesday morning, accompanied by several members of his staff and local officials. He spoke with emergency responders and toured the wreckage, offering his support and thanking the first responders for their bravery and quick action.
“I just wanted to come here today and show my support for the people of Palestine and the surrounding communities,” Trump told reporters. “This is a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by it.”
During his visit, Trump also spoke with some of the families of the victims, offering his condolences and promising to do everything he could to help them in their time of need.
“I know that no words can take away the pain that you are feeling right now,” Trump said. “But I want you to know that we are here for you, and we will do everything we can to support you and your families.”
The former president’s visit was welcomed by many of the residents of Palestine and the surrounding areas, who said that it was a much-needed show of support during a difficult time.
“We appreciate President Trump coming here today and showing his support,” said local resident Susan Smith. “It means a lot to us, and it shows that he cares about what’s happening here.”
The cause of the train derailment is still under investigation, and it is not yet clear what led to the accident. However, Trump pledged to do everything he could to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
“We need to do more to ensure the safety of our rail systems and to prevent accidents like this from happening,” Trump said. “I will work with the government and the private sector to make sure that we are doing everything we can to keep people safe.”
