ACCRA, Ghana — August 21, 2026 — President John Dramani Mahama says the first 700 housing units under Ghana’s revived Saglemi Housing Project are expected to be completed by March 2027, marking a major step toward bringing the long-delayed development back into use.
According to Ghana’s Information Services Department, the revived project forms part of the government’s broader effort to address the country’s housing shortage and recover value from infrastructure that has remained incomplete for years.
The Saglemi project was originally developed to increase access to housing, but delays left thousands of planned units unfinished. Reviving the development provides the government with an opportunity to put existing infrastructure to use rather than allowing the investment to remain dormant.
The expected completion of the first 700 units could provide additional housing at a time when demand continues to grow, particularly in Ghana’s rapidly expanding urban areas.
The project could also serve as an important test of the Mahama administration’s ability to complete stalled public infrastructure projects and ensure that previous government investments ultimately benefit citizens.
Housing has wider economic implications as well. Completing major residential developments can generate construction jobs, support local suppliers and businesses, and encourage additional development in surrounding communities.
If the March 2027 target is achieved, the delivery of the first 700 Saglemi units would represent an important milestone in the revival of one of Ghana’s most prominent unfinished housing projects.
For many Ghanaians, however, the key questions will be not only how quickly the homes are completed, but also how affordable they will be, who will qualify for them, and how the remaining Saglemi units will be brought into use.
