ARUSHA, Tanzania — August 18, 2026 — The East African Community is expanding efforts to strengthen regional statistical capacity through the launch of new self-paced online training courses, providing officials and other participants with greater access to skills needed to collect, analyze, and use reliable data.

The initiative comes as the EAC continues working to strengthen the institutions needed to support deeper economic and political integration among its partner states.

Reliable and comparable statistics are increasingly important for regional decision-making. Common data standards can help governments and EAC institutions measure cross-border trade, migration, economic performance, fiscal developments and progress toward regional integration goals.

Better statistics can also help policymakers identify where integration policies are working and where additional intervention may be necessary.

The statistical initiative comes alongside the EAC’s broader financial planning. The Community recently presented a proposed US$110.9 million budget for the 2026/27 financial year before the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The budget provides resources for the EAC’s regional institutions and programs as the bloc works to advance cooperation among its member states.

For ordinary East Africans, stronger regional statistics may appear highly technical, but the information influences decisions involving infrastructure, border management, employment, trade and government services. Reliable data can also help governments better understand how people and goods are moving across the region.

The development demonstrates that regional integration depends not only on major treaties and political summits but also on building the technical and institutional capacity necessary to implement those agreements.

Why it matters: Deeper East African integration requires countries to understand what is happening across their economies and borders. Common statistical systems, stronger regional institutions and effective use of the EAC budget can help policymakers measure progress and make better decisions as the region moves toward greater economic integration.
