
ABUJA, Nigeria — August 12, 2026 — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is moving forward with plans for solar-powered water infrastructure in Liberia, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, highlighting how regional cooperation can translate into practical projects directly affecting local communities.
ECOWAS procurement notices closing on August 12 include plans for the installation of 15 solar-powered autonomous water stations in Liberia and another 15 stations in Côte d’Ivoire, along with additional autonomous water stations planned for Nigeria.
The projects combine two major development priorities facing West Africa: improving access to reliable water supplies and expanding the use of renewable energy.
Solar Power Could Reduce Dependence on Electricity Grids
Autonomous solar-powered water stations can be particularly valuable in communities where access to electricity is limited or unreliable.
