KERCH, Crimea — June 23, 2026 — A major fire erupted at a thermal power plant in the Crimean city of Kerch following reported overnight strikes, causing widespread power outages across large parts of the Russian-occupied peninsula, according to local monitoring groups and occupation authorities.
The incident occurred early Monday after what Ukrainian and Russian monitoring channels described as a large-scale drone attack targeting strategic infrastructure in Crimea. According to the independent monitoring group Crimean Wind, the fire broke out at a thermal power facility in Kerch’s Arshyntseve district after a storage tank was reportedly struck.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed large flames and thick black smoke rising from the facility. Satellite imagery reviewed by monitoring groups indicated that the smoke plume extended approximately 47 kilometers from the site.
The extent of the damage has not been independently verified, and neither Russian nor Ukrainian military officials immediately provided detailed assessments of the strike.
Russian-installed authorities in Crimea acknowledged widespread power outages but attributed them to what they described as “technological disruptions in electrical networks.” State-run electricity provider Krymenergo announced that emergency repair crews had been deployed and estimated that electricity service could be restored within 24 hours.
According to occupation officials, the blackout affected several cities and districts, including Yevpatoria, Saky, Krasnoperekopsk, Dzhankoi, as well as the surrounding districts of Saky, Dzhankoi, Krasnoperekopsk, and Krasnohvardiiske.
The latest incident comes amid an intensifying Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian military, logistics, and energy infrastructure in Crimea. The peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014 but internationally recognized as part of Ukraine, has become a key battleground in the ongoing war.
Overnight, reports emerged of explosions across multiple locations in Crimea. Monitoring groups stated that facilities near Port Kavkaz and other strategic sites were targeted. Russian authorities temporarily suspended traffic across the Crimean Bridge, a vital transportation link connecting Russia to the peninsula.
The strikes follow a series of Ukrainian attacks over the weekend that reportedly targeted gas infrastructure, oil terminals, air-defense systems, and military logistics hubs across Crimea.
Military analysts have noted a growing sophistication in Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces have increasingly demonstrated the ability to conduct coordinated attacks deep behind Russian lines, targeting critical infrastructure and military assets.
The attacks are part of a broader effort by Kyiv to disrupt Russian supply routes and military operations supporting forces in southern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have consistently maintained that military and logistical targets in occupied Crimea remain legitimate objectives under international law.
As of Monday afternoon, Russian authorities had not reported any casualties resulting from the Kerch power plant fire. Emergency crews continued efforts to contain the blaze and restore electricity to affected communities.
